Are Stem Cell Therapy Treatments All the Same?

Questions to Ask Stem Cell Therapy Clinics

Who does the stem cell therapy procedure?

Board certified doctors (MDs or DOs) should be the ones who are overseeing the stem cell therapy treatment. In addition, the physician should have completed stem cell therapy training through a recognized orthopedics organization.

How is the stem cell treatment performed?

Stem cell therapy procedures that are performed blind should be avoided. Stem cells need to be precisely placed in order for the treatment to work. For this reason, image guidance using ultrasound and/or flouroscopy should be used.

What organization certified the clinic?

There are specific organizations which certify stem cell therapy specialists. One such organization is the Interventional Orthopedic Foundation. This certifies that the physician has received the appropriate training to be administering the stem cell therapy treatment.

What is the source of the stem cells?

Amniotic and cord blood stem cells are regulated by the FDA and are required to be nonviable or dead. Amniotic cord blood is said to be effective when treating “blood cancers such as leukemia or lymphomas;” however, due to the fact that the cord blood stem cells are dead, they are useless when it comes to treating arthritis or other orthopedic conditions. Additional information about cord blood usage can be found in the following article: Cord Blood: What You Need to Know. Adult bone marrow that has been centrifuged should be used when treating patients with injuries and/or arthritis.
